Left Winger Shawn Thornton played his 705th and final NHL game as Florida Panthers went up against Buffalo Sabers. It was a bitter sweet send off for the hockey player. The fans gave a standing ovation, hockey players tapped their sticks and the cats won 3–0. Panther fans on Facebook share their feelings about his departure:

“He’s a Class act and leader in his own right. His veteran presence in the locker room will be missed, especially to the young players” said Raimundo J Contreraz.

“Sad in seeing him retire one of the good tough guys in hockey, the last of a dying breed of players which will hurt the NHL up the road” said Bobby Dunat

“I moved here from Massachusetts and I am thankful for his leadership on the Bruins 2011 championship team” said Dan Edmonds

“Shawn Thornton was a tough hockey player who always gave it his all and left it all on the ice every night” said Jimmy Quick

Thornton had a passion for the sport of hockey. He showed it as he played on the ice and expressed it in this statement from Miami Herald:

“I love it; I still have fun every day,” the Left Winger said. “I think that’s the key to guys who stick around a long time; we’re all having fun. … I took a lot of punches in the face, logged a lot of miles on the bus. But then there were a lot of filets on charter flights. It’s the best job in the world and I am very fortunate I was able to do it for 20 years.”

His presents on the ice will be missed, but he’s still going to be a part of the Florida Panther family. According to Miami Herald Thornton will partner up with CEO Matthew Caldwell handling the business aspect of the organization. There is no mention when he will start his new career path.

Thornton had one fulfilling hockey career taking on the title of enforcer with pride. He won the Stanley Cup twice, once with Anaheim Ducks in 2006 then with Boston Bruins in 2011. His presence has made a permanent mark in the hearts of fans and hockey players, so he will never be forgotten. Below is video of Thornton’s best Boston Bruins moments
