Florida Panthers vs Chicago Blackhawks
Florida Panthers battled Chicago Blackhawks last Monday which resulted in a 6–3 win at the BB&T Center. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov performed a shorthanded goal in the third period which ended the tied score.
Defenseman Aaron Ekblad scored which was his 10th goal for the cats and Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves. The Goaltender talks about Barkov’s game on nhl.com:
“[Barkov] stepped up at the right time as usual. “He’s definitely a special player. I think he’s the best player in the world. He does so many things behind that nobody can see. He’s so valuable for us.”
Forward Patrick Kane put Blackhawks on the board and Kevin Lankinen made 30 saves. The Goaltender talks about the toughness of the 4–2 game on Saturday on nhl.com:
“It’s a good reminder of what it takes to win in this league. Every team is good, it’s not easy to win. We can’t let the game slip away for five seconds or five minutes, it’s going to cost you. We’re learning that the hard way now. In the long run we’ll mature, learn from this and be an even better team coming up.”
With this win, the Panthers are tied with New York Islanders having 42 points in the NHL. The cats haven’t been first in the standings since Dec. 28, 1996. Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar talks about the team’s performance on the ice on nhl.com:
“We’re just a different team this year, and I think the League is starting to notice that. We deserve all the credit that we’re getting right now. It’s fun to be in South Florida.”
The game took off when Kane performed a turnover putting the Blackhawks on the board at 10:38 in the first period. Owen Tippett brought the cats into the game with a one-timer coming from the left circle went off both Blackhawks defensemen Conner Murphy and Calvin de Haan on a power-play which tied the score 1–1. Blackhawks made it 2–1 as Philipp Kurashev scored a one-timer during the second period.
The Blackhawks continued increasing the score as Brandon Hagel made it 3–1 at 13:02 after the puck hit teammate Duncan Keith in the chest and dropped to the crease to his skates. The cats weren’t giving up yet as Ekblad made it 3–2 with a power-play goal as he performed a wrist shot at the left circle. Defenseman Gustav Forsling made the cats even with the blackhawks 3–3. Florida Panthers dominated the third period as Barkov made it 4–3, Carter Verhaeghe changed it to 5–3 and Alex Wennberg scored the game winning goal of 6–3 as he placed the puck into the empty net.
